Choosing the Right Paint Set.
I have used a variety of painting media in my journey to artisan-ship. Often my choices were dictated by the amount of money I had at the time. I began as a child doodling with only a number 2 pencil - the kind that my parents provided me for elementary school. And later won an art class from the museum of art in Honolulu, Hawaii, when I was in 6th grade with a painting I did using poster paints (the kind that is powder and is mixed with water). So if you want to become an artist just start with anything you can get your hands on and use your imagination and ability to study to learn and do as much as you can. Experiment with a variety of mediums to find the one that best fits what you want to express. My best advice is to buy the highest grade that you can afford at the time. The higher the grade determines the lasting power of the artwork that you will be creating. I often still work with student grade paints when laying out ideas for paintings I have - just to help save on expenses.
When starting out choose an affordable paint set, as it will offer a nice range of colors to work with along with a additional items that are needed to paint, generally at a lower price than you would spend if you were to buy them all separately. Acrylic paints are a plastic mixed with pigment (similar to your house wall paint) that can be mixed with water and dries very quickly. While for the most part watercolors are less expensive (depending on the grade), acrylic paints once dry on your painting surface will not muddy any overlaying colors that are added later, while with watercolor paints you must use a fixative first, allow it to dry and then add your overlay color. To vary the drying time of acrylic paints various media have been developed, i.e. some media will allow a slow drying time to allow the paint to mix on the canvas or some change the appearance of the dried paint (more matte, stiffer or more fluid).
